How did I get here? (“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” 1 Cor 3:16)

What was my transforming moment? (“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of God is, there is freedom.” 2 Cor 3:17)

What do I do now? (“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.” 2 Timothy 1:7; “And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills’ Exodus 31:3)

- Melba Theater, 1955. R. C. Hickman Photographic Archive (VN 85-43-000279a), The Center for American History, The University of Texas at Austin

MCCGD is pleased to host

BEHOLD THE PEOPLE: R. C. Hickman’s Photographs of Black Dallas, 1949-1961

R. C. Hickman was a Dallas photographer whose thousands of images produced from 1949-1961 document aspects of life in an African American community in Texas. Mr. Hickman photographed celebrities and notables such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, Nat King Cole, and Ambassador Ralph Bunche when they visited Dallas. But his pictures show more than the celebrities. His photographs depict a community largely invisible to white Americans — thoroughly a part of mainstream America by virtue of accomplishment and lifestyle but excluded from it because of race.

Contrary to the perception that nearly all black Americans have lived in poverty – and we have all seen our share of such devastating images – here is an historically significant record of accomplished, hard-working black middle-class citizens in the urban South. The harrowing issue of racism, the integration of the Dallas schools, and civil rights activities are all documented here, but just as important are the less- dramatic images that tell us about the little-known or understood black middle-class African-American life.

Mr. Hickman worked as a commercial portrait photographer, as a photojournalist for several black newspapers in Dallas, as a freelance photographer for national black publications such as Jet, Sepia, and Ebony, and as a photographer for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). His images reveal his awareness of the broad community context within which individuals survive, grow, and understand themselves.

MCCGD hosts this exhibit of 56 black and white photographs (from the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, University of Texas at Austin) from January 15th through February made possible in part through a grant from Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

(Description in part excerpted from Preface to Behold the People: R.C. Hickman’s Photographs of Black Dallas, 1949-1961 by Barbara Jordan.)
